Are you building a fence? Hand digging is a thing of the past – this is how an earth auger will save you 2 days of work
After digging five holes, your back hurts and the work is just beginning. When building a fence, often a single step is decisive – digging the holes for the posts. A manual process can take you an entire weekend, while a machine can do it in a few hours. We'll show you how a ground auger works, which type to choose, and what it can do for you.
Manual vs. machine: the difference you'll feel immediately
Manually digging post holes involves high physical strain and low work efficiency. The most common tool used is a spade or pickaxe, which digs through the soil layer by layer. In practice, this means that in hard or compacted soil, with stones or roots, the time required for one hole is approximately 20 to 30 minutes, and that is only under ideal conditions.
When using a ground auger, it is a mechanized drilling, i.e. the rotational movement of the spiral, which removes the material and at the same time brings it to the surface. The result is a precise hole without the need for additional expansion. This reduces the time required for one hole to approximately 20 to 30 seconds, while the physical effort is significantly lower.
This makes a huge difference in terms of work efficiency. With a larger number of holes, work that would take two days by hand can be done in one afternoon. At the same time, the risk of straining the entire body, especially the spine, is reduced.
When do you need a gasoline drill?
Land conditions are often more challenging than they seem at first glance, and when digging by hand, the resistance of the soil quickly becomes apparent. All you need to do is:
- clayey or compacted soil
- dry, hard ground
- tree roots
- more holes
In such conditions, manual digging quickly loses its effectiveness. A gasoline auger has enough power to cope with even more demanding terrain. In practice, this means less physical effort, precise and even holes, and better conditions for stable installation of posts.
One vs. two operators: the difference in performance and comfort
Not every drill is the same. And this is often where the decision is made about whether the work will be comfortable or difficult.
One-man drill
The one-man drill has a power of approximately 1.4 kW and weighs around 10 kg. Thanks to its lower weight, it can be operated by one person and is ideal for smaller projects. The spindle reaches up to 200 revolutions per minute, which allows for fast and precise drilling.
It is especially useful for lighter soils, smaller hole diameters, fewer holes, or when you need flexibility. The ergonomic handle and anti-vibration system increase comfort while working.
Two-man drill
If you are facing hard or rocky ground, go for a more powerful solution. The two-man auger is designed for more demanding conditions, has a power of approximately 2.9 kW and weighs almost 29 kg. It is operated by two people, who better manage the torque and ensure stability.
The speed is lower (around 50/min), but the high torque allows for drilling larger diameters and deeper holes. This is especially useful for larger projects where fence construction is more challenging.
Two people work with it – one holds the machine, the other stabilizes it.
The result is safer and performance is noticeably higher.
How to dig a post hole correctly: the diameter matters
When choosing a ground drill, it is not enough to focus only on the machine's performance. It is also important that the resulting hole is not inaccurate or "by eye". The key parameter is the diameter of the drill, which should correspond to the type of posts and the method of their installation - for example, whether they will be directly driven into the ground or fixed into concrete.
At Ramirenta, you have the advantage of being able to choose from various attachments for your earth drill, meaning you can choose the exact drill diameter according to your specific needs.
Smaller diameter (thin drill bits):
- e.g. for metal posts
- are suitable for easy anchoring of posts directly into the ground
Larger diameter:
- e.g. for wooden or robust columns
- where you need a wider opening to create a stable concrete bed around the post
The correct diameter will save you not only time but also material, and you will not waste concrete unnecessarily.
Safety tips: watch out for kickback
When working with an earth auger, safety must be considered. If the auger hits a rock or root, it can come to a sudden stop – so-called kickback.
Modern machines are therefore equipped with a QuickStop system, which in such cases immediately stops the engine. This safety feature significantly reduces the risk of injury.
Always hold the handles firmly and stand steady when working. Coordination between operators is important when using a two-man drill.
Do not forget to fulfill your legal obligation under applicable legislation depending on the type, height and type of fence. It is advisable to verify these conditions before starting work. It is equally important to ensure accurate measurement of the fence installation by a surveyor, who will determine the boundaries of the land according to the cadastral map. This will avoid the risk of encroachment on neighboring land and you are sure that the fence will be placed correctly and in accordance with the registered boundaries.
Why is it worth renting a machine?
Investing in your own earth auger for a single project, such as building a fence, does not make economic sense in most cases.
A more sensible solution is:
- rental for several days
- access to professional equipment without the need for a high initial investment
- exactly the type of machine your project requires (lighter one-man or more powerful two-man)
- possibility to choose the exact drill diameter
In practice, this means a professional result without unnecessary costs.
